PaintCare operates paint recycling programs that offer a practical solution: responsible disposal at no additional cost. Whether you have a few cans or more than 100 gallons, PaintCare provides convenient drop-off locations and a free large-volume pickup service in participating states.
How Can Painting Contractors Use the Program?
- Painting contractors can drop off leftover paint at one of PaintCare’s drop-off sites. PaintCare operates a network of more than 2,500 drop-off sites across all PaintCare states. Find a drop-off site near you by visiting PaintCare’s online site locator at paintcare.org.
- Utilize PaintCare’s free Large Volume Pick Up (LVP) Service. The LVP service is available in all PaintCare states to painting contractors or others who have more than 100 gallons of eligible paint products, measured by container size, not liquid volume.
- If you are in a non-PaintCare state (states that have not passed a paint stewardship law), our site locator lists your nearest local household hazardous waste (HHW) programs and events. If you can’t find an option on our site locator, contact your local government waste authority. If you are located in Canada, please visit ProductCare to learn more about your recycling options.
- PaintCare recommends that painting contractors take the PaintCare fee into account when estimating jobs, ensuring quotes include the fee to be passed to their clients.
About the PaintCare Program
PaintCare is the nonprofit organization that plans and operates paint stewardship programs in states that pass the paint stewardship law.
- Where does PaintCare Operate?
- PaintCare currently operates programs in 11 states and jurisdictions, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Maine, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. Additional programs are currently being planned in Illinois and Maryland.
- What products are accepted in the PaintCare program?
- PaintCare drop-off sites accept house paint as well as primers, stains, sealers, and clear coatings such as shellac and varnish. Please visit our Products We Accept page for a full list of PaintCare products.
- What is the PaintCare Fee?
- PaintCare programs are funded by a fee (referred to as the PaintCare fee) which is applied to the purchase price of new paint sold in the state. There is no additional charge for dropping off paint at a PaintCare drop-off site. The PaintCare fee is not a tax nor a refundable deposit. The fee funds all aspects of the paint stewardship program.
